Filmcraft 0.4.0 · local browser engine · early release
FilmCraft 0.4.0 runs in your browser. Proxies, render previews, Project Manager and mask tracking require desktop threads and are unavailable in this browser build.
Need FilmCraft’s full native timeline, scopes and codec workflows?
Import footage from the File menu or start a demo project.
Edit tracks, effects, grading and captions in the timeline.
Save a .fcproj project and export media from the File menu.
How to use Video Studio
- Press Open Video Studio. The editor first loads a demo project, which is a quick way to explore the panels before starting your own project from the File menu.
- Import clips through the File menu (it opens your browser’s file picker), or drag video, audio and image files onto the editor.
- Open a clip in the Source monitor, mark an In and Out point, then press , to insert it or . to overwrite on the targeted tracks. Dragging clips onto the timeline works too.
- Tighten the cut with the ripple, roll, slip, slide and razor tools. Play with L, reverse with J and stop with K.
- Grade shots in the Lumetri Color panel, drop transitions and effects from the Effects panel, and add titles with the Type tool directly in the Program monitor.
- Balance dialogue and music in the Audio Track Mixer, then save the project as a .fcproj file and export an H.264 MP4 from the File menu. Progress shows in the header, and the finished file downloads.
Tips for better results
- Prefer MP4 or MOV sources. H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video in MP4 or MOV can use the browser’s own (often hardware) decoder. Large MKV or WebM files import more slowly.
- Keep the tab open while exporting. This browser build renders one frame at a time on a single thread, so the export only advances while the page is running.
- Click once if there is no sound. Browsers keep audio muted until you click or press a key in the page; after that, playback follows the audio clock.
- Grade in passes. Fix exposure and white balance in Basic Correction first, then add a Creative look, curves or colour wheels on top.
- Reuse caption files. Caption tracks can import and export SRT and WebVTT, and captions can be burned into the exported video.
- Shorten heavy timelines. Without proxies or render previews in the browser, splitting a long edit into shorter sequences keeps playback responsive.
Who it is for and how your files are handled
Video Studio is built for YouTube videos, tutorials, short films and captioned social clips, and for anyone who knows Premiere-style panels and shortcuts and wants a free editor that runs without installing anything.
Footage is never uploaded: the editor reads the files you pick directly from your device. While you have unsaved changes it keeps a recovery snapshot of the project, plus copies of imported media up to 4 GiB each, in this site’s private browser storage, so a crashed or closed tab can reopen your work on the next visit. A saved .fcproj and exported MP4 are still your real backups.
Video Studio questions
Which files can I import?
Common camera and phone files in MP4 or MOV, Matroska/WebM, audio files and still images. FilmCraft’s own decoders cover H.264, HEVC, VP9, AV1, ProRes, DNxHR, AAC and Opus.
Can I move a timeline to another editor?
Timeline interchange is included: Final Cut Pro XML, FCPXML, OpenTimelineIO and CMX 3600 EDL are among the supported formats.
Why is export slower than in a desktop editor?
The browser build cannot use worker threads, so decoding and encoding share one thread. For long or high-resolution projects, the desktop downloads above will be faster.
